 What Happens When We Die? A Perspective Worth Considering

When we eventually leave this earthly life, what happens next? Do we fall into a deep sleep until the resurrection day, or do we immediately enter heaven? It’s a question that has intrigued and divided devout Christians for centuries. In fact, it remains one of the most frequently debated topics among Bible students and is often a source of disagreement between denominations.

Let’s go back to the moment of Christ’s crucifixion. One of the criminals beside Him cried out, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” And Jesus replied, “Truly I say unto thee, today thou shalt be with Me in paradise.”

Now, here’s where it gets interesting; where do we place the comma? Before or after the word today?

The placement of that single comma has sparked countless discussions. Does Jesus mean, “Truly I say to you today, you shall be with Me in paradise” - emphasizing when He’s saying it? Or does He mean, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in paradise”, indicating that the man would be in paradise that very day?

It’s a major difference, and one that has fueled various theological interpretations.

Yet, many believers are convinced that when we die, we simply sleep until the return of Christ, as other scriptures suggest. This divergence in belief only adds to the confusion. So perhaps, instead of trying to force an answer, we can approach it from a different perspective.

Let’s begin with what we know for sure: God doesn’t make mistakes. Whether we sleep for a moment or a thousand years, time won’t matter, because in death we are unaware of its passage. The moment we close our eyes on earth, we will, when the time comes, open them in the presence of our Lord.

So really, what’s the issue?

Personally, I don’t mind either way. My concern is not about the timing of entering heaven, but about being ready for it. The real focus should be on living a good, honest, Christ-centered life, no matter the challenges. And if you find that everything in life is going a little too smoothly, without resistance or hardship, perhaps it’s time to reflect. Satan tends to leave those alone who aren’t a threat to his agenda.

Our time here is short. Use it well. We are here to grow in wisdom and prepare our souls, despite the obstacles the enemy throws at us. Paul didn’t say, “I have fought the good fight” without reason. Life on earth is a battlefield, and Satan roams freely on it. But one day, we’ll leave this battleground and join our brothers and sisters who have gone ahead of us.

So, will we enter heaven immediately? Wonderful! Will we sleep for a while? That’s fine too. God knows best. I’d rather spend my time seeking His face than chasing after questions He has already answered in His perfect way.

We cannot, nor should we want to, change what God has decided. And frankly, some of us might even welcome the idea of a bit of rest before eternity begins!

So, keep fighting the good fight. Stay strong in your faith. And remember the words of Ephesians 6:12 (KJV):

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities,
against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world,
against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

And when it’s all over, I’ll see you in heaven.
